This policy explains what Openings Game ("we," "us," "our") collects when you use the site at this domain (the "Service"), why, and what choices you have about it. If anything here is unclear, contact us — see the Contact page.
1. What we collect
Account information
When you create an account, we collect the email address and password you provide. Passwords are handled entirely by our authentication provider (Supabase Auth) — we never see or store your password in plain text.
Training data
As you use the trainer, we store which lines you've practiced, your results on each line, and your current streak. This is the core data the Service needs to function — without it, there's nothing to train against.
Preferences
Board color, piece set, and light/dark theme are saved to your account (and mirrored in your browser's local storage so they apply instantly, even before your account data has loaded).
Content you submit
If you submit or create a course/notebook, we store the opening lines, names, and any notes you write for it, associated with your account.
Billing information
If you start a free trial or subscribe, our payment processor, Stripe, collects and stores your payment details (card number, billing address, etc.) directly — we never see or store your full card number. What we do store, associated with your account: your subscription plan and status (trial, active, canceled, past due), trial/renewal dates, and a Stripe-generated "fingerprint" identifying the payment method (not the card number itself) used for a trial, which we use only to prevent the same card from being used to start unlimited free trials across different accounts.
Automatically collected information
Like most web services, our hosting and infrastructure providers automatically log basic technical information (IP address, browser type, request timestamps) for security and reliability — this is standard server-log data, not something we actively analyze about you individually.
2. What we don't collect
- We do not run third-party advertising or ad-tracking scripts.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with data brokers or advertisers.
- We do not collect or store your full card number or other raw payment credentials — those go directly to Stripe. See "Billing information" above for what we do store.
3. How we use your information
- To create and maintain your account, and let you log back in.
- To track your training results and progress on each line.
- To show your own stats (streak, mastered lines, leaderboard position) back to you and, where a feature is explicitly public (like leaderboards), to other users.
- To keep the Service secure and working — detecting abuse, debugging errors, and similar operational needs.
- To process free trials and subscription payments, determine what level of access your account has, and prevent the same payment method from being used to start unlimited free trials across different accounts.
4. Where your data lives
Account data and training data are stored in a Postgres database hosted by Supabase, which also provides authentication. The site itself is hosted on Netlify. Payments and subscription billing are handled by Stripe, which stores your payment details directly under its own security practices and privacy policy. All three are established infrastructure providers — we don't operate our own servers or store raw payment credentials ourselves.
5. Cookies and local storage
We use your browser's local storage (not third-party tracking cookies) to remember your theme and board preferences between visits, and to keep you signed in. This is functional storage, not used for advertising or cross-site tracking.
6. Leaderboards and public content
If you appear on a leaderboard, your display name and score are visible to other users of the Service. If you submit a public course, its content (and the name you submitted it under) is visible to anyone browsing courses. Anything you don't want visible to other users shouldn't be entered into a public-facing field.
7. Your choices
- Access and correction — most of your own data (preferences, submitted courses) can be viewed and changed directly from your profile or the relevant page.
- Deletion — you can request deletion of your account and associated personal data at any time by contacting us. We'll remove what we can and retain only what we're required to for legitimate operational or legal reasons (e.g. preventing abuse of the same account being recreated).
- Data export — if you'd like a copy of your training data, ask and we'll provide it in a reasonable format.
8. Age
Openings Game has no minimum age requirement — the Service contains nothing but chess opening training content, and is suitable for use by anyone.
9. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a material way, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after a change means you accept the updated policy.
