Terms of Service

These Terms govern your use of Openings Game (the "Service"). By creating an account or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

1. The Service

Openings Game is a chess opening trainer: a real interactive board, drills, time trials, and opening-derived tactics puzzles. Anyone, signed in or not, can browse the full course library and train each course's main line for free. Full access to every variation in a course requires an account with an active free trial or paid subscription — see Section 3 below. We may add, change, or remove features at any time, and we don't guarantee that any specific piece of content will remain available forever.

2. Accounts

• You need an account to save training progress. You're responsible for the accuracy of the information you provide and for keeping your login credentials secure.
• One account per person. Don't share credentials or let someone else train on your account in a way that would distort leaderboards or progress tracking.
• You can delete your account at any time — see the Contact page.
• We may suspend or terminate an account that violates these Terms, at our discretion, including for abusive behavior, cheating on leaderboards, or submitting content that violates Section 4 below.

3. Billing, trials, and subscriptions

Full access to every variation in every course (beyond each course's free main line) requires a paid plan:

• Plans: Monthly, $0.99/month, or Yearly, $9.99/year. Prices are shown in USD and may be subject to applicable tax.
• Free trial: new accounts may start a 7-day free trial, which requires a valid payment method on file. During the trial you get full access. If you don't cancel before the trial ends, it automatically converts into a paid subscription (whichever plan — monthly or yearly — you selected when starting the trial) and the payment method on file is charged automatically. We don't send a separate reminder before this happens beyond what your card issuer or Stripe may provide — cancel before the trial end date shown on your account if you don't want to be charged.
• Direct subscription: you can also subscribe immediately without a trial, in which case you're charged right away.
• Auto-renewal: both Monthly and Yearly subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period, and the payment method on file is charged automatically, until you cancel.
• Canceling: cancel any time from the "Manage billing" button on your Profile page, which opens our payment processor's self-serve billing portal. Canceling a trial or subscription stops future charges but doesn't refund or shorten the current period — you keep the access level you had (full access) until the current trial or billing period ends, then your account reverts to free, main-line-only access. You stay signed in and can resubscribe at any time.
• Refunds: charges are generally final and non-refundable, including partial periods when you cancel mid-cycle. If you believe you were charged in error (e.g. a billing bug, or a trial that converted despite being canceled in time), contact us and we'll look into it — refunds in that situation are handled case by case, at our discretion.
• Payment processing: payments are processed by Stripe. We don't receive or store your full card number — see the Privacy Policy for what billing-related data we do store.
• Trial abuse prevention: to keep the free trial meaningful, a payment method that's already been used for a trial may be blocked from starting another trial on a different account (it can still be used to subscribe directly, without a trial, on any account). If this affects you, you'll see: "This payment method has already been used for a free trial on another account. You can still subscribe directly with this card (no trial), or sign in to that other account and complete a payment to free it up for another trial."
• Failed payments: if a renewal charge fails, we'll show a notice on your account and Stripe will retry the charge per its normal dunning schedule; continued failure may result in your subscription being canceled and your account reverting to free, main-line-only access.
• Price changes: we may change prices for future billing periods. If we do, we'll give notice before it applies to you, consistent with applicable law.

4. Acceptable use

When using the Service, you agree not to:

• Use bots, scripts, or automated tools to farm streaks, leaderboard scores, or training progress;
• Attempt to access another user's account or data without authorization;
• Interfere with or disrupt the Service (including its hosting or database) or attempt to reverse-engineer non-public parts of it;
• Use the Service for anything unlawful, harassing, or intended to harm others.

5. User-submitted content

If you submit a course, opening line, or other content through a feature like Submit a Course:

• You keep ownership of anything original you contribute. Submitting it grants us a non-exclusive, worldwide license to host, display, and make it available to other users of the Service as part of normal operation — that's the whole point of a shared feature — but it doesn't transfer ownership to us.
• You confirm the content is either your own work, in the public domain, or something you otherwise have the right to submit — chess moves and opening theory themselves aren't copyrightable, but don't paste in someone else's copyrighted written annotations, prose, or commercial course material.
• Submitted content must actually be about chess openings — no spam, advertising, or unrelated material.
• We may remove submitted content at our discretion, including if it's reported, inaccurate, or violates these Terms.

6. No warranty

The Service is provided "as is." We try to keep opening theory accurate and the trainer bug-free, but we don't guarantee the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any specific line, hint, or piece of theory is perfectly accurate — chess opening theory itself evolves, and mistakes happen. Use your own judgment, especially for anything you plan to rely on in a real game or tournament.

7. Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, Openings Game isn't liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Service. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you've actually paid us in the 12 months before the claim — which, if you've only ever used the free main-line tier, is nothing.

8. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make a material change, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
